Vega State Forest

Vega State Forest is located in north central Puerto Rico along PR 22 near the town of Vega Alta. Note that PR 22 is a tollroad which require cash and exact change. You can take PR 2 to avoid the tolls, but you will encounter stop lights and slower traffic. It is a fairly quick drive from the city of San Juan.

The Vega State Forest includes karst formations, that are created when acidic water dissolves away limestone to create sinkholes, caves, or other rock formations. So there are some caves and tunnels to explore in the state forest, but be aware of the fruit bats, which are harmless but can be startling. Vega State Forest also includes some picnic and barbeque areas as well as some hiking and biking trails. You can also enjoy some bird watching in the area.

Vega State Forest is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9am to 5pm. Call the Vega State Forest information line at 787-883-2240 for additional details and to plan your trip.
