Puerto Rico Airports
Puerto Rico serves as a regional air travel hub for the Caribbean and thus most major U.S. airlines fly directly to Puerto Rico as well as other major international airlines and some regional airlines. For many smaller Caribbean islands in the area, you may need to connect through Pureto Rico.
Luis M. Marin International Airport
The Luis M. Marin International Airport (SJU) is Puerto Rico's main international airport and it has daily flights to many major U.S. cities. It is a major airport not just for Puerto Rico, but also serves as a hub connecting other smaller islands and countries. The airport is located about 10 miles outside the city of San Juan, but there are lots of taxis, rental cars, and buses available for transport. The airport isn't very large and can get very busy when passengers from cruises all travel to the airport to return home.
The airport doesn't have very many options for eating except for fast food restaurants. However, there are a variety of shops that offer tourist items for sale, but your best option is getting some Puerto Rican rum from one of the duty free shops.
Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport
The Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport (SIG) is located in the Miramar district of San Juan, Puerto Rico right by the Puerto Rico Convention Center. It is also across the San Juan Bay from the main cruise ship piers. The airport is commonly referred to as Isla Grande Airport and it mostly handles regional air traffic between some of the nearby Caribbean islands. It is much smaller and has much less traffic than the Luis M. Marin International Airport, which is also in San Juan.
The Mercedita Airport (PSE) is located in Ponce, Puerto Rico and is an international airport that services the southern portion of Puerto Rico. The airport currently has direct flights from New York City as well as Orlando, but it only has one runway, so flights are limited compared to the much larger Luis M. Marin International Airport in San Juan.
Rafael Hernandez Airport
The Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN) is located in the city of Aguadilla in northwestern Puerto Rico. It is an international airport with flights to New York City, Newark New Jersey, and a couple cities in Florida. In addition to passenger services, the airport handles quite a bit of cargo traffic.
