La Fortaleza, also known as the Palacio de Santa Catalina, is located in the Old San Juan portion of San Juan Puerto Rico. La Fortaleza overlooks San Juan Bay and serves as both the residence and the office of the governor of Puerto Rico. It is actually a complex of several connected buildings including a chapel and dungeon, surrounded by gardens. La Fortaleza was originally built in 1533 as a fort to protect San Juan from pirates, however El Morro Fort and San Cristobal Fort were subsequently built and provided better protection for the city.
Guided tours of La Fortaleza are available weekdays, however they are prone to cancellation due to official events. Therefore, it is recommended that you call and make a reservation. The tours are free of charge, but a small donation is requested, and are conducted in both Spanish and English.
