Guilarte State Forest

Guilarte State Forest is in the southwestern portion of Puerto Rico quite a ways inland from the coast. It is about 3 or 4 miles from the city of Adjuntas near Lake Garzas. The Guilarte State Forest is not contiguous, it is seperated into several large sections in close proximity to each other.

Guilarte State Forest offers some great camping sites, including sites managed by the government. You will need to get a camping permit for a small fee. You can either pitch your own tent or rent a cabin for a few days. Camp sites for pitching a tent are usually quite inexpensive (a few dollars a day), whereas the cabins tend to cost more around twenty dollars per day. The state forest also provides some great hiking and bird watching opportunities as well as some picnic areas and access to Lake Garzas where you can do some fishing. Lake Garzas is a fairly small lake that has a pedestrian suspension bridge that spans a narrow portion of the lake to allow for easy crossing.

Guilarte State Forest is open Tuesday through Sunday and is closed on Mondays. The facilities are open from 9am to 5pm. For additional information or the latest forest conditions call 787-829-5767.
